Understanding Solution Architect Role for Digital Transformation Initiatives

In a rapidly changing technology environment, organisations face the need to transform their IT delivery and systems’ solutions to meet emerging rapid business requirements. This digital transformation demands specific expertise and a set of practices to align business focus with technology solutions. Solution architecture is an important practice before any technology solution development through IT project starts. It can be viewed as a combination of architecture processes and solution delivery that addresses specific business needs or problems.

Solution architects have four main influencers; enterprise, technology value, project team and stakeholders. Organisations need to understand that they can evolve their solution architecture by addressing these influencers. They need to know whether the solution that they build can increase the ROI from their technology investment and improve constituent value to satisfy stakeholders' needs in delivering new business opportunities.

Solution architects also need to work closely as part of the project team with the project manager to address the stakeholders' concerns and their requirements. Typically, they are going to give dynamic and conflicting goals and this is where solution architects need all the right criteria for making the initiatives seamless and able to maneuver and cater to the stakeholders’ needs to ensure the success of the project.

Solution architects are also the interface between the system engineers and software developers on one side and the stakeholders and business users on the other. They act as the go-between and help ensure the solution does what it is meant to accomplish.

The solution architects have an important role in determining the underlying strategy and plan for the organisations. A solution architect can help organisations design a solution that fits their technology stack and the overall enterprise ecosystem in terms of digital transformation initiatives.

In addition, solution architects can be instrumental in planning out a better technology project and solution roadmap and help determine organisations’ future direction. By leveraging on solution architecture approach, organisations can create a framework that aligns corporate objectives and goals with specific technologies. Well-built IT systems created with solution architecture are more likely to be in budget and on time than IT projects built without this speciality.
