Implementing Digital EA with TOGAF Framework and ArchiMate Modelling Language
A common language is important to get everyone in the organisation on the same page especially when it comes to aligning business and technology. The Business and technology teams do not always speak the same language but are the most relevant concerns for organisations when embarking on digital transformation. Digital Enterprise Architecture Framework is the principle and practice that will continue to deliver the EA benefits for the digital business. It is a foundational structure or set of structures for developing a broad range of architecture that consists of a process and a modelling component. The TOGAF framework and the ArchiMate modelling language – both maintained by The Open Group – are the two leading and widely adopted standards in this field.
Using the ArchiMate Modelling Language with the TOGAF EA Framework
When integrating ArchiMate with TOGAF, it creates clear communication in aligning business and technology where it will lead to a better implementation of digital transformation strategy and realise its objectives. Through ArchiMate, architecture views and concerns during the transformation process can be addressed clearly so that the business productivity can be improved and new capabilities are created.
ArchiMate allows you to develop, visualize and analyse your business structure in a defined and controlled manner and provides business leaders and IT architects a common language to describe how the enterprise works best. It is known for complementing TOGAF to make it more practical and seamless. Although ArchiMate could be used with other architecture frameworks, it is normal to expect that ArchiMate and TOGAF can be used together with no major drawbacks. When both ArchiMate and TOGAF share the same foundation, the architecture development process can be described with a complete formal language.
TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) defines the core meta-model that requires to be addressed in TOGAF implementations, such as, different artifacts are required to be produced in different phases of the ADM.
In Figure 1 below, it shows that TOGAF ADM splits enterprise architecture into different domains and layers (i.e. the core layer of ADM: Strategy & Motivation, Business, Application, Technology and Implementation & Migration). ArchiMate also takes the same approach where in the different domains are corresponding to the different layers which are dependent on one another.

Figure 2 below, it shows the base of ArchiMate meta-model with only core elements that are related. The meta-model supports the holistic view of overall enterprise development. It aims to interconnect elements between ArchiMate Motivation aspect with core layers (biz, app, tech). This can be achieved by utilising the Motivation- and Strategy-concepts, and also by using implementation concepts, as well as Product-concept that is common to agile methods. A holistic view can be taken by utilising all these ArchiMate concepts, which can be linked together to model the trace from abstract goals to concreteness: from WHY to WHAT.
