Developing Baseline and Target Architecture for Organisations

Developing Baseline and Target Architecture for Organisations

Through a complete and thorough Architecture Vision development process, organisations will be able to visualise the anticipated values from the establishment of Digital Enterprise Architecture (EA) and enable new digital business models discovery, business capabilities development and improve the operational efficiency perpetually. Organisations will also be able to understand the organisation landscape by developing a Baseline and Target Architecture that can enable architecture success to be realised through better customer experience as well as to set the strategic direction for sustainable values.

Setting the Baseline Architecture

The baseline architecture is the “as is” or “current” architecture. It includes architecture assets from all architecture domains. The architecture is manifested as an early version of the final system and is also a subset of the entire system. The value of baseline architecture is that they serve as a starting point for defining transitions to target architecture in transforming the organisation by evaluating the current architecture gaps continuously and make the necessary refinements and changes.

By identifying and classifying critical use cases during the Gap Analysis, the organisation can make decisions as well as gain a better understanding of what the architecture needs to do and how the elements of business, data, application and technology in the entire organisation should interact with each other. Through this understanding of the baseline architecture, organisation can define and evaluate the target architecture.  The defined baseline architecture serves as a guide for the whole organisations to be followed in subsequent iterations of the EA journey.

Architecting an Ideal Customer Journey

During the Gap Analysis, organisations should take into consideration listening to the customer's feedback, and enhancing and tailoring their experience accordingly for a successful realization of the target architecture. By visualising better customer experiences, areas of concern and how the user is expected to behave can be identified and addressed. Through the information gathered, organisations can form the basis of a business case for a better understanding of the baseline architecture development.

Baseline architecture is important to any organisations because it gives visibility to the solutions for the EA implementation and allows for rationalisation and consolidation of technologies.

Defining the Target Architecture

The role of EA is central to strategy and execution. A target architecture establishes the foundation for planning and allocating resources, and streamlining activities in order to achieve a desired future state. Target architectures are designed to align potential business needs with the best-fit technologies to achieve organisational objectives.

It is easier to map out and define the target architecture after understanding the goals, determining desired business outcomes, and aligning the baseline architecture. It is also crucial to establish the overall business goals to ensure that all stakeholders are heading in the same direction and the target architecture should address how the technology can realise the business goals. Through the Gap Analysis study, architects are able to articulate, present and interact better with the stakeholders across the organisations in communicating the target architecture to be realised.

Summary

Organisations must start with the integration of both the baseline and target architectures concept into their digital transformation roadmap plan. A focused Digital EA enables organisations to better prioritise their transformation initiatives by achieving business goals through the realization of the target architecture.
