Artificial Intelligence (AI) is perhaps the most important emerging technology in the world today. It has a strong presence, and the value it has delivered so far is undeniable. it is sneaking up into everyday lives such as the digital assistant on smartphones and the use of chatbots. With the use AI becoming more established, many organisations are trying to get the latest AI technology without any clue on how to tackle and implement it. AI technology will without doubt bring organisations forward.

To get in depth with AI, one must understand the meaning of AI, what exactly AI does. According to Gartner, AI uses advanced research and logic-based methods to interpret occurrences, automate decisions and take actions. AI or machine intelligence started around 1950 when a mathematician, Alan Turing developed the Turing machine to break codes during World War II and the Turing test of computer intelligence with a simple question “Can machines think?”. AI is replicating human intelligence through machines. Machine Learning is the subset of AI that deals with the extraction of patterns from data sets and Deep Learning is a specific class of Machine Learning complex algorithms.

Not everyone knows the technical know-how of the digital assistant on smartphones and organisations should first comprehend that AI is not like any other technology, it’s a specialised technology. The development and implementation are a real challenge for most organisations because it requires customisation to fit into the business idea. To figure out how it can fit perfectly, an extensive understanding of the organisation and AI itself is needed. According to the founder of Google Brain, cross functional knowledge of how the business runs is important in order to customise AI appropriately to determine precise business results. This means that having an in-depth analysis on Information Architecture with data integration and dependencies clarity over the overall organisational landscape, both business and technology which signifies that Enterprise Architecture (EA) is inevitable in implementing AI.

Getting Artificial Intelligence right with Enterprise Architecture

EA assist organisations to get better understanding of the overall landscape including the business logic, processes, strategies, technology and data landscapes, as well as the stakeholders. EA has an important role in determining the future of the organisations and it can help to overcome some of the challenges when implementing AI.

Organisations need to identify the core elements that can define AI within the business and technology landscape and assess the impact of introducing AI into the landscape. Through EA, it is possible to precisely identify its current data capabilities that need to be restructured in order to integrate AI which will change many existing processes. In the process of executing and managing the implementation, architects can ensure the capabilities and technology used are secured in an orderly manner. Organisations should analyse feedback and ensure to optimise the AI technology. By assessing information architecture landscape regularly and how data are being structured to support the business decision making process, organisations may fine new ways to make AI better and broadening its scope as well as increasing the return of investment.  Gartner mentioned that ethical mishaps is inevitable in digital business even for big successful organisations. When dealing with keeping AI right, Gartner suggest to:

  1. absorb digital ethics and digital connectivism when improving digital business;
  2. use case studies related to AI as the ethical issues are often common;
  3. encourage everyone to participate in the AI ecosystem by contributing their data to enable digital interactions.

EA undoubtedly has an important role in proving the future possibilities through target architecture definition to incorporate AI components because EA is an enabler for technology transformation through Digital Enterprise Map and it is undeniable that EA is an essential tool for successful deployments of AI technologies adoption that bring maximum business impacts to the organisation.
